NPC Reference
Notes:

1) Under "Location" - a number following a # indicates a map reference to a location on one of Steve's maps and "Area" followed by a letter (e.g., "Area-D") indicates a section of Baldur's Gate as shown on one of Gary's Travel Chart maps. Steve's maps.

2) Most NPC's start at a level depending on "your" characater's (the Leader's) level. The "Leader Level" entry indicates the level of the Party Leader when a NPC was encountered. If the NPC was rejected and visited later (after the Leader's level went up), the changed Leader Level and NPC statistics are shown in square or curly brackets, [ ], {}. Typically NPC Level, HP, Specialities, and Spells are affected by Leader Level. Some of these changes may be random.

3) It appears that NPC stats are actually based upon the "average" Level of your party, not just on your Leader's level. However, the point is that newly found NPCs will have different stats depending upon your Leader/Party's Level, which we have shown for convenience, as the Leader Level.

4)From the BG version 1.1.4315 (patch) README file - "If you have a conversation which requires a 3rd person who is not present, Biff the Understudy will appear and take the part of the other character. This keeps the conversation from crashing the game and ensures the player doesn't miss any critical game dialogue." - Basically, BIFF is NOT an NPC and is not usable in a party.
