Multi- and Dual-Class Rules

Multi Class Rules
  1. Available to non-humans only.
  2. Can have either two or three classes
  3. Share the traits and restriction of all classes.
  4. Always uses the most favorable combat value and best saving throw from character's different classes.
  5. Experience points are divided equally among all (2 or 3) classes.
  6. Gain levels according to the experience point tables for each class.
  7. Hit points gained are 1/2 (or 1/3) of what character would get for the class just advanced including any to-HP bonus from high Constitution. (The Constitution bonus to-HP should be 1/2 (or 1/3) for the level but I am not sure if it is in BG - you may get the total bonus).
  8. If wearing armor or wielding weapons that are not allowed by one of their classes, their abilities in that class are not available until they stop wearing that armor or using that weapon.
Dual Class Rules
  1. Available to humans only.
  2. Not available for Paladin, Ranger or Bard classes.
  3. Characters start their adventuring life as one class and then later switch to a different class.
  4. Can only dual class after character has reached level 2 in their starting class.
  5. Character must have 15 in all prime stats of his first class, and 17 in those of the new class.*
  6. When character changes classes, the abilities of the former class are NOT available until the character has gained at least one more level in their new class than they had in their old class. (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!)
  7. After switching, the character earns no more experience points in the old class and can never switch back to the old class.
  8. Character uses combat and saving throw tables appropriate to his new class and level.
  9. If wearing armor or wielding weapons that are not allowed by one of their classes, their abilities in that class are not available until they stop wearing that armor or using that weapon.
  10. Apparently in BG dual-classing is limited to only one change of class and only to those class combinations allowed for multi-classing (i.e., Figher/Cleric, Fighter/Druid, Fighter/Thief, Fighter/Mage, Cleric/Ranger, Cleric/Thief, Cleric/Mage, and Thief/Mage).
